Abstract
Objective: A meta-analysis comparing ceftriaxone versus other cephalosporins in the parenteral perioperative prophylaxis is carried out.

Methods: Data from published and unpublished trials of the last 10 years were collected from various databases and by handsearching. Different operative fields (obstetrics, gynecology, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery etc.) with their several antibiotic regimes are regarded.

Results/Discussion: The meta-analysis is still in work and the results are expected in summer (July 1997). It will give us more information if the use of a third generation cephalosporin in the perioperative prophylaxe is more effective as the common used. Different outcomes (wound infections, pulmonary infections and urine infections) will be regarded. In dependency from the results advantages and disadvantages of the use of 2nd and 3rd generation cephalosporins will be discussed with regard to cost-effectiveness and global consequences of the development of resistance.
