Disseminating results of systematic reviews through a TV show in Brazil

Abstract
Introduction: One important aim of the Cochrane Collaboration is to disseminate the results of systematic reviews, other is the participation of consumers. In an developing country with continental dimensions like Brazil it was attempted through a TV show called Evidence-based Medicine.

Objective: To involve Brazilian doctors and consumers with the concepts and the product on the evidence based medicine movements. Study site: Sao Paulo Medical Association, Brazil.

Methods: A proposal about a TV show elaborated by the Centro Cochrane do Brasil submitted to the Sao Paulo Medical Association aiming medical continuing education based on evidence, presented by a doctor interviewing University faculties with recognized expertise in theirs areas, that agree only to make statements evidence based. It was supported. A survey was prepared and conducted 18 months after the start.

Results: 550 shows were broadcasted nationwide; 1773 doctors answered a questionnaire. 94% (95% Cl, 93 to 95) ranked it as good or nice. 8% (95% Cl, 6 to 9) watch it regularly, 51% (95% Cl, 48 to 53) when possible and the subject is related to their areas. 79% (95% Cl, 77 to 81) of the doctors are able to access it. The three Brazilian top medical research funding agencies, have called for more research into evidence based medicine.

Discussion: The use of a TV show in open channel is suitable for covering medical scientific gaps and create an evidence based medical culture in Brazil. The TV show continues, and has had private and medical association support for more than two years. The impact on consumers needs to be assessed.
