Abstract
Abstract: The Cochrane Collaboration is composed of consumers, reviewers, coordinators, working group members, hand searchers, and others. The role of the librarian within the collaboration is less well-defined and may be one group of individuals that should be highlighted to facilitate the use of the Cochrane library as a foundation for clinical practice. Evidence-based education programs in hospitals and universities have historically emphasized posing a focused question, searching for evidence using the MEDLINE database, and critically appraising articles retrieved. Fewer programs have provided training specific to the use of the Cochrane Library and other evidence-based resources. Hospital and health faculty librarians are in a position to facilitate dissemination, training, and use of the Cochrane Library in clinical settings. We will give an example of librarian-clinician partnerships which were fostered in one university hospital through the formation of an evidence-based practice committee made up of clinicians, researchers and a librarian. The committee's primary goal was to facilitate the transfer of research evidence into clinical practice through educating clinicians in available health information sources, predominant among these, the Cochrane Library. The role of the librarian has been crucial in this endeavor and has included the following activities: 1. intensive training in using the Cochrane Library by providing workshops, presentations, individual educational sessions. The content of the educational sessions includes formulating the clinical question and searching for evidence; 2. creating a clinician-driven web site for fast reference to evidence-based resources and "how to" tips. Specific examples of the key role the librarian played in maximizing the use of the Cochrane Library to answer clinical questions will be given. The question to be asked of the colloquium attendees is, "Might the Collaboration consider actively seeking hospital and university health librarians from around the world to enhance the unique contributions they would be in a position to make as a new, separate entity within the Cochrane Collaboration?"
