Abstract
Background: This is based on the experiences of the three authors, two dermatologists and a rheumatologist. It attempts to put the problems encountered into perspective.
Method: We examined the library and electronic information facilities available at the two University Hospitals in the Western Cape, South Africa, with emphasis on the dermatological and rheumatological works. We then detail the work required of each individual.
Results: In excess of 1500 titles are catalogued in each library, although many are no longer current, and a number have been cancelled due to financial cutbacks. 26 Dermatological and 18 Rheumatological titles are available in the two libraries, a majority of which are duplicated. There is an efficient interlibrary loan system. Journals from elsewhere in S.A. and internationally are available, at a price. E-mail, Medline and Medscape are all accessible. CDs are available with abstracts from a number of international congresses. All three consultants have a heavy service load, an estimated 90% of time being expended in either teaching or service. The remaining time is split between administration, research and reading. Virtually all of the electronic searching and writing of the review was performed after hours. The present situation in unlikely to improve in the immediate future, and may even deteriorate with a further reduction in research time.
