Abstract
Abstract: In recent months, the use of computer networks in general medical practice has seen a rapid expansion in France. This expansion has been encouraged by the development of a specific intranet known as the 'RSS' (in French, 'R seau Sant Social'; in English, 'Social and Health Network') for the collection and management of prescription forms for patient reimbursement by the Social Security System and the increasing use of smart cards to identify health care professionals and patients. The French Ministerial Health Task Force for Computerisation of Health Professionals identified this intranet and the internet more generally, as potential technical solutions, not only for computerised order-entry, but also for delivering information, such as evidence on the efficacy and safety of interventions, and drug management systems. This could offer one of the most promising tools for decreasing medication errors, preventing adverse drug reactions due to wrong dosage or interaction, and thus improving drug use. One requirement for the Evidence-Based Medicine paradigm to be put into practice is the availability of information at the time physicians need it, and in a format that enables the immediate capture of its contents. Computerisation of the information transfer appears to be the most appropriate solution for satisfying these constraints. Since practising physicians lack the time and, often, the skills to review all the evidence found in primary sources of information they need secondary sources such as unbiased systematic reviews. The Health Task Force feels that Cochrane reviews are currently the best secondary sources. However, this material is in English and cannot be read quickly because of the quantity of the text. Thus, it has been proposed to translate the abstracts for the Cochrane reviews and to adapt them for use in the RSS intranet. The organisation for the production of the French-language summaries and a model summary will be presented. The transfer of these Cochrane review summaries to the physicians' desks could be one of the first steps in the computerisation of therapeutic information for French physicians.
