Abstract
Background: PIH is a common disorder that complicated 6-8% of pregnancies and can progress to a life-threatening situation for both the mother and the fetus. In Chinese traditional medicine, number tens of herbs are used for treating PIH, and their pharmocological functions were demonstrated by experimental research.

Objectives: To assess the effects of medicinal herbs for treating PIH and pre-eclampsia.

Search strategy: Relevant trials are identified from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (latest isse) which contains the Pregnancy and Childbirth Groups specialised register; MEDLINE (from 1966); EMBASE (from 1980); and the Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM)(from 1975). Besides, some trials published or unpublished are searched by hand . Date of last search: March, 2004.

Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials reporting the effect of Chinese herb medicine in treating women with PIH.

Data collection & analysis: Data were extracted independently by one reviewer.

Results: Overall, this review includes 12 studies, involving 1405 women. Chinese herb medicine is effective and better than western medicine in reducing the MAP [total WMD -0.40 ,95%CI(-0.65 to -0.15)], reducing the volume of postpartum hemorrhage [total WMD -57.20 ,95%CI(-67.44 to -46.96)], relieving the risk of caesarean section [total OR 0.37,95%CI(0.19,0.72)], improving the symptom and sign [total OR0.20, 95%CI (0.13,0.31)], treating IUGR [total OR 0.19,95%CI(0.12,0.30)], reducing the risk of neonatal asphyxia [total OR 0.38,95%CI(0.17,0.87)], decreasing the risk of intracranial hemorrhage of neonate [total OR0.13 ,95%CI(0.05 to 0.36)], decreasing the risk of neonatal death [total OR0.27 ,95%CI(0.07 to 0.98)]. Chinese herb medicine is effective but not better than western medicine in changing the hemodynamics [total WMD -0.04 ,95%CI(-0.18 to 0.10)] and increasing the birthweight [total WMD 0.56, 95%CI (0.08 ,1.04)].

Conclusions: Chinese herb medicine could effecetively treat women with PIH,and its effect is much better than western medicine in some aspects. More high quality randomised controlled trials are required to promote the strength of evidence. These studies should be large.
