Abstract
Objectives: To reveal the disease pattern of the study contained in NHS EED by counting the number of studies according to the system organ class (SOC) category, the highest level of ICD-10 category.

Methods: We first constructed a table matching ICD-10 SOC and MeSH which can also be used in other databases such as CDSR and DARE. However it does not match well with the MeSH of NHS EED. So, we constructed a table using NHS EED disease field codes, which derived from MeSH 2000, to solve this problem. Then we searched NHS EED and classified the studies according to the table. The search was done on 5 March 2004.

Results: The numbers of the studies registered in NHS EED are as follows: Total including combination of study type:3,736(100%); primary study:2,533(68%); review:1,286(34%); and expert opinion: 663 (18%). In 1,286 review studies, the numbers of studies according to the category are as follows (duplication is counted separately): (I) Certain infectious and parasitic diseases:189(15%); (II) Neoplasms:238(19%); (III) Diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism:40(3 %); (IV) Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases:76(6%); (V) Mental and behavioral Disorders:48 (4%); (VI) Diseases of the nervous system:72(6%); (VII) Diseases of the eye and adnexa:17(1%); (VIII) Diseases of the ear and mastoid process:16 (1%); (IX) Diseases of the circulatory system:240(19%); (X) Diseases of the respiratory system: 56(4%); (XI) Diseases of the digestive system:164 (13%); (XII) Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue:23(2%); (XIII) Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue:53 (4%); (XIV) Diseases of the genitourinary system:61(5%); (XV) Pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium:56 (4%); (XVI) Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period & (XVII) Congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities:29(2%); (XVIII) Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified: 7 (1%); (XIX) Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes & (XX) External causes of mortality:37(3%); (XXI) Factors influencing health status and contact with health services: 0 (0%); (others):149 (12%)

Conclusions: The most clinical studies registered in NHS EED use primary study not review study. Among 18 categories, systematic review is rather frequently used in (IX) Diseases of the circulatory system, (II) Neoplasms and (I) Certain infectious and parasitic diseases.
