Abstract
Background: There is a need for evidence-based, flexible education for nurses and physicians in the European Union (EU).
Objectives: To show how the Cochrane Library, Clinical Evidence, and other systematic reviews can be used for flexible postgraduate training in paediatrics for nurses and doctors in the EU.
Methods: Chapters on Evidence-Based Child Health (EBCH) and on Paediatric Respiratory Infectious Diseases (PRIDE) were written in English, Hungarian, and Swedish. Questions, pictures, video-clips, and animations are now added. PRIDE is mostly based on The Cochrane Library (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and HTA) and Clinical Evidence. I have in some cases performed a systematic review if no such review is available for an important clinical question. Video-clips and other illustrations and recorded sounds (e.g. stridor, cough) are sometimes available free from the Internet. In other cases, we have had to hire a professional contributor.
Results: SWOT analyses: Strengths: The group has expertise in paediatrics, editing, web design and computer science, evidence-based medicine, photography, etc.
Weaknesses: Difficulties in keeping strict deadlines. Sometimes difficulties in communication.
Opportunities: New ideas grow in this multicultural group, and we learn a lot from each other.
Threats: Running out of time and money. Insufficient resources for updating and quality control.
Conclusions: It is possible to create evidence-based and web-based flexible education for nurses and physicians for a reasonable price. The evaluation of the courses by pilot groups of nurses and doctors is forthcoming.
