Abstract
Objectives: Evidence-based practice consistently incorporates the best available research evidence as part of the decision-making process. Systematic reviews are an important evidence source, as they synthesize all of the primary research in one area. Making systematic reviews readily accessible to potential users presents a challenge to review authors and organizations. As internet access is now prevalent in most developed countries, a key element in many dissemination strategies has been the use of websites. This workshop will explore 1) the use of websites as a means of disseminating reviews, with a web site being one part of a broader knowledge transfer strategy to actively engage users in the KT process, 2) the development of web sites to address users' needs and customize the user's experience based on preferences and areas of interest, and 3) features of web sites (e.g. research updates, user profile settings) that contribute to an active overall KT strategy.
Description: Meeting the information needs of parents and decision makers involves making the research evidence both accessible and digestible. For each audience, presenters will focus on content development, use of summaries to present the results of reviews, and opportunities for skill building within the target audiences. We will discuss ways of establishing both a web presence and credibility of websites as information sources. Another issue to be addressed is how to seize the opportunity for education that exists when promoting the uptake of research evidence. Research literacy and critical appraisal skills are two of the items that could be addressed through the use of tutorials on a website.
This workshop combines lecture, small and large group discussion around use of the web in promoting uptake of reviews. The format will facilitate interaction among workshop participants and presenters. Participants will receive a complete set of notes which can be used for future reference.
Target audience: Those who are planning or maintaining websites to promote the use of review evidence.
Style: Discussion workshop
