Abstract
Background: In Belgium, the use of scientific information by nurses is not usual and the Evidence based nursing (EBN) concept is not well known. Several arguments can explain this fact: a weak nurses' scientific interest, informatics tools' scarcity accessible to hospital nurse, a heavy nursing workload in the care units, a poor English knowledge. But the nursing research does exist and is available from the scientific literature. One year ago in Belgium, a scientific centre (CEBAM branch of the Cochrane Collaboration) began to develop several seminars about EBN. It has also set up for the nurse professionals an interface with the scientific literature. In the French community of Belgium, several EBN training sessions were specifically organised in 2004 for the benefit of nurse professionals.
Objectives: This study analyses (1) the nurses' needs in terms of EBN education and (2) the impact of the session of EBN education on the information-seeking behaviours of nurses and on the nursing practice.
Methods: We used two tools. Firstly, we sent a self-administered questionnaire to all nurses who attended a seminar about EBN in 2004 (n=100). This questionnaire included questions about demographic characteristics, motivation to follow this EBN seminar, acceptance of EBN concept, personal interest about EBN, reference to EBN in his/her practice, wishes for the future, EBN interest for the nursing profession, main obstacles to use EBN and scientific resources, Secondly, to estimate access rate to the virtual library, we will use the log file of the virtual library to compute the monthly access rate, the evolution of access rate, and the average access time by access. To analyse the dataset, we will use the SPSS software. (The data collect is in progress).
Results (expected): The study is in progress; detailed results will be available in June 2005.
Conclusion: With this study, we will able to answer the following questions: with a proper training, do the nurses use the EBN literature? Why is it important to develop the EBN concept among the
nursing profession? How can we develop the EBN education to increase its impact?
