Abstract
Background: Meta-analysis of time-to-event data requires the calculation of study-specific log hazard ratios and their standard error. This procedure can become challenging and complex. To facilitate data transformation, the Venezuelan Branch of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Network (ICN) has prepared a special piece of computer software.
Objectives: To facilitate the calculation of the log hazard ratio and its standard error required for conducting meta-analysis for time-to-event data.
Methods: The software transforms a range of combinations of information (such as log-rank p-values and 2x2 event tables) into log hazard ratio and its standard error. It requires very little space on the computer's hard drive, and can be used on a variety of computers and over the Internet. We developed it with Personal Hypertext Processor (PHP), and using a Data Base Manager System (DBMS) Postgre SQL, version 7.4. 5. This is open source software, with a General Public License (GPL). Output from the software can be copied and pasted into RevMan. The software is written in English.
Results: By overcoming the difficulties of data transformation, we expect that the software will make it easier for authors to conduct meta-analysis for time-to-event data in their Cochrane reviews.
Conclusions: We expect this free program to be a helpful tool for people wishing to prepare and maintain a Cochrane review. Please visit www.cochrane.fcs.uc.edu.ve/deted for further information.
