Abstract
Background: The need for evaluating and summarizing the existing scientific evidence to facilitate the use of the existing evidence in clinical practice is well recognized. Despite the tremendous work undertaken by The Cochrane Collaboration, there is still limited evidence available for oral healthcare professionals. Objectives: To develop a comprehensive approach to identify the existing systematic reviews undertaken in oral health care and identify the gaps of knowledge in the oral health profession. Methods: We have developed a comprehensive search strategy for identifying systematic reviews in dentistry based on the common terms in different disciplines in dentistry and translated it accordingly for different databases including MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, LILACS, AMED and etc. We also screened governmental websites, HTA website, online dissertations and etc. for additional relevant systematic reviews and contacted individuals based in different countries around the world to identify local and non-English databases or systematic reviews. We will try to identify further sources for systematic reviews to expand our search and will screen the results to identify and categorize the systematic reviews based on their specialty and quality to identify the present gaps of knowledge in oral health. Results: As of March 2008, we run the searches for MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ERIC, AMED, CINAHL and BBO and retrieved about 7502 results and identified eight additional local databases by contacting individuals in France, Italy, Iran, Germany, Brazil, and Turkey. We will expand our searches to the additional databases identified and will be screening the retrieved results to identify systematic reviews in dentistry. Conclusions: The initial results show not only the diversity and amount of the reviews undertaken but also the different ways the systematic reviewers address a similar question. Full results of the project will be completed by October 2008.
