Abstract
Background: In order to support review authors in the preparation, maintenance and update of Cochrane reviews, a number of centrally located online training resources have been developed and made available. In addition, many individual review groups and methods groups provide their own learning materials to provide extra support for their members. To date, information regarding what is on offer by individual groups has not been identified and described. Objectives: The purpose of this scoping exercise is to identify and assess the range of currently available additional resources provided by individual review groups. Identification of such resources provides an opportunity to share good practice and encourage a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Methods: Internet searching and exhaustive description of 51 review groups and 29 methods group training and education materials were conducted February to April 2008. Information retrieved was entered into a crib sheet for data extraction and quality assessment. Information retrieved has been divided into a number of discrete categories either topic based or resource type to fully identify the range of currently available resources. Results: Preliminary results have shown that the majority of review groups provide similar core training materials. In addition, a number of review and methods groups provide additional learning support materials unique to their particular group but which may have wider application potential. Conclusions: Individual review groups have provided unique opportunities to develop high quality learning materials. Sharing information may promote opportunities and raise awareness of additional learning opportunities.
