Abstract
Objectives:

The Cochrane Diagnostic Test Accuracy Working Group has developed a series of workshops addressing guidelines as formulated in the Handbook for Diagnostic Test Accuracy reviews. This workshop is designed to introduce the principles of meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy studies.

Description:

The framework for meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy studies as implemented within Cochrane diagnostic test accuracy reviews will be presented. We will start with an overview of the various statistics to express the diagnostic performance of an index test, such as sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios and diagnostic odds ratios. Then methods for graphically summarising results from original studies will be presented: forest plots of sensitivity and specificity, and the ROC plot for presenting paired sensitivity-specificity results. Basic methods for estimating a summary ROC curve will be presented as they are implemented in RevMan 5, and the rationale for using these methods explained. The workshop will conclude with an overview of possible sources of heterogeneity and methods for assessing heterogeneity.
