Abstract
Background: Evidence based physiotherapy practice has gained momentum in the recent past, with all the professional organisations including world confederation of physiotherapy adopted EBP as a measure to improve the quality of care. Through our study and other literatures it was identified that one of the important barriers for EBP is lack of awareness about the EBP resource among the professionals with entry level qualification. Cochrane database provides the best information to the clinicians and its free access to Indians could be best utilized to make the best decisions.
Objectives: Introduce cochrane data base to entry level Physiotherapy student. Asses the impact this module.
Methods: During the final year, 27 entry level physiotherapy students were introduced to Cochrane systematic reviews through structured programme. This programme consisted of introductory interactive lectures regarding EBP and Cochrane reviews. Followed by these lectures the students are taught how to access Cochrane systematic reviews through demonstrations and small group discussions. Then they were given a clinical scenario, and asked to identify the Cochrane systematic reviews related to the problems. The student’s feedback was obtained by using a structured questionnaire. Their knowledge about Cochrane database and systematic reviews were obtained.
Results: The usage of Cochrane data base was increased. The student’s knowledge about Cochrane database is good and they were clear about the process of Cochrane systematic reviews. They could retrieve the related reviews and use them for clinical decision making. Some of them identified potential topics of reviews and in the process of registering their titles with respective Cochrane groups.
Conclusions: Introducing Cochrane systematic reviews at the entry level curriculum is feasible and will create a positive impact on the health care professionals. This project made an impact on some of faculty members too.
