Abstract
Objectives:
1. To provide an update on the methods that are being developed to assess implementation within effectiveness reviews.
2. To provide reviewers with practical strategies for extracting data on implementation from effectiveness reviews.
3. To illustrate how implementation can be addressed in qualitative reviews and integrated with evidence from effectiveness reviews.
Description: Cochrane has instigated several initiatives to explore the development of methods to explain intervention effects better; these include the Methods Innovation Fund project (Methodological Investigation of Cochrane Complex Intervention Reviews (MICCI)) and the renaming and revised remit of the Qualitative Methods Group to the Qualitative and Implementation Methods Group (CQIM). The Group will be developing methods for assessing implementation in effectiveness reviews. This workshop will outline the different definitions for implementation. The challenges to the conceptualisation and assessment of implementation in effectiveness reviews will be discussed. It will feature practical examples and tips for extracting implementation data from primary studies. The workshop will feature a newly developed screening instrument (checklist for process and implementation (CH-IMP)) and discuss how Cochrane effectiveness reviews can be integrated with other types of reviews to strengthen causal explanation and extrapolation. The session will include a hands-on practical component.
