Abstract
Background: Facial palsy is very common disease, and traditional Korean medicine (TKM) is very widely used for facial palsy in Korea. However there is no Korean multidisciplinary guideline for facial palsy and thus, an adequate guideline for domestic circumstances is required.
Objectives: A clinical practice guideline for Korean medicine (CPG-KM) is required for the following reasons: firstly, an evidence-based clinical practice guideline is required to make the most of the unique characteristics of oriental medicine, which is based on a strategy for treatment that is prompted by individual symptoms. Secondly, there is a need for research to improve the quality of the traditional medical service and to approach patients with a reasonable primary care system based on the traditional medicine way of thinking in a modern society that is complemented by growing advances in science and new information.
Methods: We analysed the establishment of a clinical practice guideline, formation of the professional group, plans for research progress and the way the clinical practice guideline situation developed. Afterwards, we conducted the collection and analysis of practice guidelines on facial palsy and then on Korean and Western medical literature data on facial palsy. We then developed the draft of the CPG-KM on facial palsy. The review committee reviewed and amended the guideline, then the Korean acupuncture and moxibustion medicine society reviewed and approved it.
Results: Four recommendations were developed for diagnosis of facial palsy; and 24 recommendations were developed for TKM treatment of facial palsy.
Conclusions: This is expected to induce a high quality follow-up TKM clinical study and the establishment of a foundation for a domestic oriental medicine group to take the lead in the standardization of traditional medicine as a strong point in international research on traditional medicine.
