Abstract
Objectives:
1. Explain the basic methodology of Global Burden of Disease (GBD; http://www.healthdata.org/gbd/about).
2. Explore visualisation tools for the data (http://www.healthdata.org/gbd/data-visualizations) including those for viewing mortality, causes of death, and life expectancy as well as GBD arrow diagrams, GBD cause patterns, GBD comparisons, and GBD heatmaps.
3. Discuss how Cochrane Library content and national research funding has been compared to the burden of disease to date.
4. Discuss the advantages and pitfalls of using GBD data for setting research and funding priorities.
Description: The GBD study is a systematic, global effort to measure disease burden. GBD has transformed the global health landscape by creating a quantifiable billion data point archive of burden from 306 diseases and injuries in 150 countries across the globe. International and local bodies, governments, and non-profit funding agencies may use GBD data to prioritize public health investments. Mapping the representation of disease systems in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews with burden of disease metrics allows for transparent investigation into priority-setting decisions. The goal of this workshop is to introduce and demonstrate ways that the rich GBD epidemiological database can guide prioritization of Cochrane review topics.
All participants must bring a laptop for interactive computer sessions (those unable to do so may share with others).
