Abstract
Background: evidence-based medicine (EBM) knowledge is important to facilitate clinical practice and to guarantee that the best evidence is available to making healthcare decisions. Although interest in EBM topics is increasing in Brazil, the establishment of a continuum of access to EBM and critical appraisal-related topics are a challenge for medical schools. Implementing an EBM research centre in universities is a viable option to offer future medical doctors a foundation in EBM.
Objectives: to describe the creation of an EBM research centre at Centro Universitário São Camilo, Brazil.
Methods: descriptive case study
Results: in January 2019, Centro Universitário São Camilo (CUSC, São Paulo/Brazil) launched an EBM medical research centre. The core objectives of this initiative are 1) to provide students with a continuum of access to EBM during graduation; 2) to increase the production of research synthesis and methodological studies; and 3) to offer short-duration training on EBM and research synthesis. One of the activities currently offered is a weekly Journal Club, where medical students present critical appraisals of research articles published in between the meetings. The centre also established a partnership with the central library of the university to encourage the use of the Cochrane Library. In June 2019, we aim to deliver the first edition of an introductory systematic review course that will be offered for the CUSC community and for health-related researchers of other institutions.
Conclusions: to create an EBM research centre is an initial approach to disseminate EBM concepts and research synthesis among students and professors. We aim to expand the centre to increase its activities.
Patient or healthcare consumer involvement: the establishment of an EBM medical research centre increases the engagement of future health professionals with EBM activities that will benefit patients and healthcare consumers.
