Diversity in communicating Cochrane evidence to diverse Russian-speaking audiences

Abstract
Background: for patients and consumers we translate into Russian Cochrane evidence, news on featured reviews, blogshots, podcasts, press releases, news and videos, and disseminate all these via social networks of Cochrane Russia: Vkontakte, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram. For health professionals, we partner with Russian medical journals (Kazan Medical Journal and the Journal of Kazan Medical School) to disseminate Plain language summary (PLS) translations, we deliver Cochrane evidence to subscribers of E-Lek – Essential Medicines forum in Russian, Cochrane Russia mailing list, and we disseminate Cochrane Russia Newsletter via MailChimp. For all diverse audiences we maintain Cochrane Russia website in two languages, Russian and English.

Objectives: to evaluate the coverage and impact of communicating evidence in Russian in advocacy work of Cochrane Russia and its outreach in Russia and beyond.

Methods: we used analytics services for the website and social networks, manually combined numerical data on subscribers and followers, page views, likes, reposts in social networks; looked at country and city representation for the year 2018, and comparison of numbers of website users, views and website sessions in 2016 and 2017 to 2018.

Results: by April 2019, we had achieved more than 2100 translations of PLS, 7600+ subscribers vKontakte, 940+ Twitter, 510+ Facebook, 620+ on Instagram, 300+ on Telegram, with a total of about 10,000+. We prepared and disseminated 121 podcasts and 195 blogshots. Over 2018, the number of Cochrane Russia website users reached 22,805 (84% were new users, 16% were regular users), nearly double compared to 2017 (12,209 users), as did the number of website sessions and page views, which nearly tripled compared to 2016 over the months of September to December. The majority of users were from Russia, 67%, followed by Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, USA, Uzbekistan, France, Kyrgyzstan, UK, Germany and others. The most viewed news item was about changing beliefs on Omega-3 in cardiovascular risk prevention, with 2001 views, becoming the most popular post by coverage at vKontakte with 5333 views, the highest numbers of likes, reposts and comments. People from diverse countries reach Cochrane evidence in Russian via social media, the leading countries by views and followers on Facebook are: Russia (46% to 56%), Kyrgyzstan (20% to 8%), Vietnam (9% to 7%), followed by Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, USA, Germany, Armenia, Georgia and Finland; on Twitter: Russia, UK, USA, Canada, India. Australia, Spain, Poland, Germany, and Mexico; on vKontakte: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, USA, Germany and others.

Conclusions: interest and confidence in Cochrane evidence in Russian rises steadily on a daily basis in diverse audiences, including health professionals, economists, IT specialists, biologists, and lawyers.
