Abstract
Background: our centre started the Cochrane simplified Chinese translation project in 2014, and we are now Cochrane China Translation and Dissemination Working Group. Despite increasing volunteers and attention, plenty of barriers block the development of Cochrane evidence.
Objectives: to share and discuss the experience of disseminating and developing Cochrane knowledge translation (KT) to a bigger audience and more contributors.
Methods: based on previous implementation and interaction with volunteers, we developed and maintained a normative standard operation procedure (SOP) involving a series of solutions to recruit, support, and maintain volunteers with KT in 2018. Firstly, we ran meetings in university campuses to introduce the KT project, and CENTRAL project each year, offering opportunities for medical students to become acquainted with Cochrane. We also used Wechat (largest social media platform in China), conference advertisements, under- and postgraduate courses, and academic networks to introduce Cochrane and related projects. Secondly, we work on monthly updated SOPs (including systematic review methodology, terminology and translation format, Memsource instructions) for volunteers to improve efficiency and quality of KT activities. We also regularly offer translation training on evidence-based medicine knowledge, medical translation technique and Cochrane Abstract translation pattern, and collect volunteers' feedback after training for improvement actions. Thirdly, we encourage volunteers to get involved in multiple Cochrane products or projects such as CENTRAL, podcasts, feature reviews, press releases, TaskExchange and Cochrane review help.
Results: currently 153 active volunteers from mainland China work for the simplified Chinese KT project, which is 37.9% more than in March 2018. We have more than 2356 followers on our Wechat account; we have published 677 Abstracts and Plain language summaries, 74 podcasts, four feature reviews, and two press releases on Cochrane.org in simplified Chinese, and we have released 274 Wechat posts. Abstract and Plain language summary translation has increased by 46.8% over one year since 2018. Wechat group chats and posts help increase volunteers' engagement with and draw attention to the Cochrane KT project and other projects.
Conclusions: using various methods to recrui and maintain volunteers makes our translation team grow steadily and quality has improved greatly. The Wechat platform is a great interactive platform for communication and dissemination.
Patient or healthcare consumer involvement: we keep and develop the quality, quantity and efficiency of translation to meet Cochrane 2020 multilanguage strategy so that we can make evidence more accessible to multilingual patient and healthcare consumers.
