Abstract
Background: current medicine is evidence-based, and such evidence needs to be put into practice from the moment of teaching. One of these ways is via academic leagues, where undergraduate students with interests in common, engage in extracurricular activities that include patient care, clinical case discussions, and production and dissemination of the best medical evidence.

Objectives: we aimed to summarize and propagate the medical evidence production and propagation of the vascular and endovascular surgery academic league (VESL) of the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Methods: we reviewed the production of the VESL since the start of its activities in May 2016.

Results: the VESL started its activities in May 2016 through an initiative from a group of students and professors who believed in the project. In the beginning, there were only six members, but in the second year of activities the demand grew by in 300% among students. Currently, the league has 25 effective undergraduate medical students who, after attending an introduction course, underwent a competitive selection process (i.e. specific vascular test and an interview).
Since 2016, the VESL has produced the following:
-12 scientific projects for undergraduate students;
- 45 papers presented at international congresses and symposia in different countries, such as Spain, Holland, USA and Brazil;
- 26 international indexed journal publications;
- 5 awards from the Brazilian Society for Angiology and Vascular Surgery (BSVS) (including Prof Emil Burihan Award – third place in 2016 and first place in 2018);
- first place in the Brazilian Academic Leagues Olympics for Angiology and Vascular Surgery promoted by Brazilian Society for Angiology and Vascular Surgery (Figure).

In terms of education, students participate in several activities including:
- seminars about a diverse range of vascular topics;
- community actions promoted by BSVS (e.g. Vascular Day and Thrombosis Day);
- healthcare activities (e.g. guided patient examination);
- participation in scientific programs and research development in vascular surgery;
- guided visits to operating rooms, infirmaries, emergency rooms, non-invasive laboratories and endovascular surgery rooms;
- skill classes in the specialized simulation centre focused on the main vascular procedures in medical practice.

Conclusions: in three years of activity, the group showed a wide range of educational activities, including scientific production, and showed this to be an effective way to diffuse knowledge and train young talents in this healthcare setting.

Patient or healthcare consumer involvement: the VESL project intends to produce and propagate the best evidence investing in education, training and scientific production from undergraduate students, closely guided by professors and tutors who generously share their knowledge, experience and support to make the group grow as future physicians, researchers and humans.
