Abstract
"Background While there is overwhelming documentation that integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) in clinical settings improves healthcare quality, patient outcomes, and reduces costs, healthcare professions are still challenged with having sufficient educators and clinicians who are experts in both teaching and implementing EBP approaches across settings and disciplines.
Objectives: The purpose of this presentation is to describe a global partnership between nursing educational colleges in the Czech Republic and the US to advance faculty EBP expertise and scholarship. Jointly building the organizational capacity in EBP curricular, research, and clinical practice strategies created a powerful synergy to move evidence translation and implementation forward.
Approach: To enhance the integration of EBP for knowledge translation, dissemination and implementation in both education and practice, we established a multi-prong approach for evidence-building, synthesis, and implementation within an academic setting. Strategies included developing faculty competence through EBP immersions and training, communicating leadership’s vision for the evolution and importance of evidence-based practice, partnering across units to build efficient and effective EBP dissemination practices, and providing hands-on simulation experiences and exposures to augment current practices for imbedding EBP within existing curriculum.
Results: We have successfully developed a growing cadre of faculty with expertise in EBP implementation and education, fostered successful strategies for expanding organizational capacity, and identified approaches to affect culture change, increase EBP sustainability and dissemination efforts throughout the college. Our ongoing efforts include devising educational Initiatives and programs that build a solid EBP foundation for practice as well as partnering with our community healthcare organizations and across disciplines to strengthen and engage the network of those in academia and practice.
Conclusions: Nurses comprise the vast majority of healthcare workers globally and, therefore, sit in a prime position to develop, synthesize, and implement EBP approaches to improve patient care quality, safety, and cost and promote uptake of evidence into practice. The foundation for this is laid in educational programs and in the scholarship that is disseminated globally on successes, challenges, and practices that have real-world impact on improving outcomes.
