Abstract
"Background: The Brazilian Centre for Evidence-Based Research (COBE) was established at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 2014, following the team leader’s postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Dentistry, University of Alberta (UofA), Canada. Objective: COBE's mission is to promote evidence-based research and train skilled professionals to critically analyze and synthesize evidence.
Methods: Among its activities, COBE offers continuing education courses, systematic review courses in Graduate Programs in Dentistry at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil (UFSC) and at the University of Brasília, Brazil (UnB), integrates systematic review classes into the undergraduate Dentistry curriculum at UFSC, organizes lectures and events, and publishes books and articles.
Results: Almost 30 continuing education courses have been offered, training over 1000 researchers to date. Moreover, COBE conducted international partnerships with researchers from Australia, Canada, Ecuador, France, Italy, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Turkey, collaborating with over 30 different international authors. More than 140 systematic and scoping reviews have been published since COBE's inception. The collaboration with UnB team on the article ""Oral Manifestations in Patients with COVID-19: A Living Systematic Review"", published in 2021 in the Journal of Dental Research, has significantly contributed to dentistry globally.
In 2019, COBE hosted the first Brazilian Conference on Evidence-Based Research - COBRAPE, featuring renowned international researchers from University of Ottawa, University of Alberta, and Johns Hopkins University.
Highlighting the crucial role of team composition in shaping the group’s evolution, COBE’s team comprises professors, undergraduate and graduate students, a librarian, and clinicians.
The impact of COBE's work is evident in the Scopus database, where UFSC ranks fourth in Brazil for the number of systematic reviews published in Dentistry. Additionally, the team leader is recognized as the world's seventh leading expert in systematic reviews according to Expertscape.
Conclusion: The COBE group serves as an exemplary model demonstrating how collaborative efforts can propel scientific advancement in evidence-based research, notably contributing to the production of articles of high-quality evidence.
