Abstract
"Background: Preparing parents for care after hospital discharge is an intervention that aims to reduce readmissions. This process of Discharge Teaching Scale (PedQDTS) instrument measures parents' perception of the quality of preparation for their child's discharge. In Brazil, there are no instruments that assess the quality of preparation for discharge from the parents' perspective.
Objective: To carry out the cultural adaptation and validation of PedQDTS for the Brazilian context.
Method: methodological study of instrument adaptation and validation, organized in two stages. In the first stage, cultural adaptation was carried out considering the stages: Translations; Synthesis of translations; Back translations; Assessment by a Committee of Experts; Submission of documents to the author; Pre-Test and Submission of final documents to the author. Specialists carried out the quantitative and qualitative assessment of cultural equivalence and established a consensual version. The second stage was carried out through Construct Validity, Reliability and Practicability. For Construct Validity, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used. The collection was carried out on the day of hospital discharge with the adapted PedQDTS, the Feasibility Assessment Scale (UEQ) and the characterization form in a Neonatal Unit. The retest took place between 7 and 15 days after hospital discharge. Results: During the cultural validation stage, the original version of the scale was subjected to the recommended procedures for validation. The translation, back-translation and respective syntheses stages went without difficulty. The Expert Committee considered the semantic, idiomatic, experiential and conceptual equivalences during the qualitative evaluation and after agreed modifications, a Content Validity Index ≥ 0.90 was obtained for all items on the scale. Evidence of construct validity and reliability was obtained through the participation of 189 mothers and 1 father of hospitalized newborns. Internal consistency resulted in satisfactory indicators for each domain (CN: 0.81; CR: 0.83; HP: 0.92). The average completion time was 6 minutes and 51 seconds and the majority of participants completely agreed with the UEQ items.
Conclusions: The PedQDTS–Brazilian version was obtained, which presents reliable psychometric properties for use with parents of newborns."
