Abstract
Background: Umbrella reviews (URs) provide a comprehensive analysis of findings from multiple systematic reviews on a specific topic. Methodological approaches for analyzing and presenting UR results vary. When conducting an UR, review authors may adapt recommended methods according to their research purposes.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the characteristics of analysis and presentation methods in URs related to healthcare.
Method: A systematic search of PubMed will be conducted to identify URs published within a one-year timeframe. Inclusion criteria focus on healthcare-related URs exclusively containing systematic reviews as their unit of analysis. A sample of 100 URs will be randomly selected for analysis. Data extraction will be completed in duplicate for 10% with the remaining extractions completed by one author and random checks by a second author. Data extraction will focus on bibliographic information, methodological and reporting guidance followed, critical appraisal tools used, presentation approaches used, certainty of evidence methods, and software. Descriptive analysis and narrative synthesis will be employed to summarize the findings.
Result: Preliminary data will be presented in a tabular form (with frequencies separately for URs’ characteristics of analysis and presentation) and described narratively. The study will also report identified methods that adopted or adapted from methodological guidance and the justification underlying it.
Discussion: The findings of this study will contribute to understanding the diverse approaches used in analyzing and presenting UR results, providing insights for future methodological guidance in this field.
