Abstract
Background
Aged Care Research & Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA) is an Australian Government initiative to address workforce capability, growth, and innovation in Australia’s aged care sector.
Objectives
ARIIA develops and provides access to synthesized evidence-based resources in accessible language and delivers implementation training to support translation of evidence to practice in aged care in Australia.
Methods
The ARIIA Knowledge and Implementation Hub (the Hub) is a “one-stop shop” for research evidence and resources on priority topics. A co-design approach guides the creation of the Hub’s knowledge with Evidence Advisory Groups guiding evidence retrieval and synthesis while User Groups inform approaches to communicate to end users. For each priority topic, a review of reviews, an environmental scan for resources and emerging research, and one-click PubMed searches are summarized and made freely accessible online for use by the sector.
The Hub supports the Innovator Training Program (ITP) that delivers online or face-to-face training in the contextualization of evidence, implementation principles, evaluation, and project management with the aged care workforce.
Results
Launched in August 2022, the Hub now contains 10 priority topics, 80+ evidence themes across the priority topics, and 900+ resources for use by the aged care workforce, health professionals, service providers, policymakers, and consumers. Web metrics show increasing use of these resources by the sector directly and through ARIIA programs, specifically the ITP. More aged care worker-specific resources, such as infographics, are being developed to meet the needs and preferences of diverse stakeholders.
The ITP has supported nearly 600 people to implement evidence to practice. Two case studies will be presented to illustrate the benefits and challenges of these approaches to build capacity in a "thin" workforce in Australia and internationally.
Conclusion
ARIIA is addressing the needs of the aged care sector for synthesized, accessible knowledge. The ITP ensures the sector has the skills and knowledge to adopt, adapt, and contextualize the evidence to solve real-world problems. Evaluation projects will inform future improvements for ARIIA activities and potentially improve knowledge-to-action activities within the sector. The KIH and ITP models have application to other sectors.
A sector survey was conducted to identify the priority topics.
