Abstract
"Background: Evidence-based clinical practice is a cornerstone of health services including rehabilitation. Many barriers exist between evidence derived from clinical research and practical application for clinicians. Cochrane Rehabilitation (CR) engaged in the production of an eBook in collaboration with the European Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) Bodies, collecting the best available evidence in rehabilitation to enhance knowledge translation in the field.
Objectives: To describe the experience of CR eBook and its evolution requested by stakeholders from single Cochrane Systematic Reviews (CSRs) to an Overview of the CSRs-based approach.
Methods: A qualitative study reporting the experience of CR in developing a systematic CSR collection in agreement with stakeholders and meaningful for their needs.
Results: CR produced an eBook including all SRs relevant to rehabilitation summarising them for the different audiences (clinicians, students, consumers and policy-makers), to provide meaningful and easy-to-use tools. We also developed an index with global stakeholders to help the readers navigate the content and identify the more relevant (and not covered) clinical needs (prioritization). However, in consultation with European PRM Bodies, this single reviews-centred approach was too scattered and not sufficiently practical for a concrete implementation. In the meantime, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, CR applied a mapping synthesis to overview CSRs and highlight the best available evidence in different health conditions. This innovative approach has been proposed and approved by the European PRM bodies to develop a new educational tool able to deliver the best evidence for different stakeholders’ needs.
Conclusion: Starting from the previous experience of a scattered single reviews-centred eBook, CR is developing a new overview-based initiative to provide the best available evidence for daily practice.
Relevance to patients: The production of user-friendly high-quality evidence for clinicians, students and policy-makers could provide significant benefits for patient care. "
