Abstract
Backgrounds and Objectives: Sleep disturbance is a widely impactful healthy condition of the world and also has a great threaten on physical and psychological aspects. Pharmacotherapy is current medical treatment to deal with sleep problems. However, aware of the safety of medication prescription, and having more control about self-health, a wide range of people have had a trend to seek complementary and alternative approaches to deal with sleep problems. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the effects of Reiki on sleep disturbance in adults.
Method: This systematic review examined 9 databases related to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched from their inception until December 31, 2023 published in English or Chinese languages that assessed the effects of Reiki on sleep disturbance in participants aged ≥ 18 years old with or without diseases compared with any type of control groups. Two researchers independently extracted data by utilizing a self-formulated data extraction form.
Results: The beginning search investigated 2333 articles from the 9 databases, of which 3 studies were found to be compatible with the inclusion criteria, and a total number of 122 participants of sleep disturbance. Among the 3 included studies, 2 studies indicated that Reiki had a great improvement on sleep disturbance, but one study remained ineffective on sleep disturbance. It is observed that the studies disclosed with a small sample size ranging from 39 to 43, reiki sessions in the range of 30 to 35 minutes and 6 to 20 sessions in the systematic review.
Conclusion: A limited number of sample size and studies disclosed that Reiki has positive potentials on sleep disturbance in adult from our study, but Reiki is still a treatment of unproven effectiveness and thus more evidence is needed before it can be accepted as useful, or discarded as useless. Hence, further high-quality RCTs with larger sample size are needed before a definitive conclusion on the effect of Reiki on sleep disturbance can be researched.
