Abstract
Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) considers the relevance, feasibility, and effectiveness of healthcare practices, involving efforts from professionals, researchers, educators, research centers, healthcare services, and educational institutions. The adoption of EBP improves clinical outcomes for patients and provides a positive return on financial investment, proving to be a cost-effective strategy for health facilities. Nevertheless, the consistent knowledge translation into clinical practice remains elusive, a gap that can be mitigated through implementation science.
Objectives: Given the significance of EBP and the adversities in its application, the present study aimed to understand the experience in implementing evidence in healthcare and to explore the impacts, challenges, and prospects in the implementation of evidence in Brazilian healthcare institutions.
Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study with a qualitative approach was conducted with health professionals from the Evidence Implementation Training Program (EITP), offered by JBI Brazil between 2017 and 2021. The data were imported into the MAXQDA software for thematic analysis.
Results: The analysis encompassed implementation experiences, challenges, difficulties, facilitators, potentialities, impacts, sustainability, and suggestions for advancing evidence-based practice.
Conclusions: Despite difficulties, experiences were predominantly positive. Institutional and managerial support were facilitators. The establishment of nurse-led care protocols improved quality indicators, providing patient safety and emphasizing the value of nursing in the healthcare team. Sustainability remains a significant challenge, but funding, protocol integration into institutional culture, and team engagement can drive Evidence-Based Practice forward.
