Abstract
"Background
Lower back pain ranks as one of the most prevalent causes of occupational injuries among nurses. Engaging in exercise stands out to be the least invasive method to enhance and alleviate low back pain.
Objectives
The objective of this study was to explore the effects of alleviating low back pain in nursing staff through the incorporation of core stretching exercises, guided by the recommendations supported by existing evidence.
Methods
A thorough exploration of relevant literature was conducted across four databases—PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Medline. Following a meticulous screening process, three randomized controlled trials were selected for analysis. The evaluation of each study involved a rigorous assessment of bias using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Review of Interventions, and grading was performed according to the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) criteria, categorizing the evidence level as II.
Over the period from May 14 to August 5, 2023, a total of 6 nurses participated in the study, with 3 nurses randomly assigned to both experimental and control groups. The experimental group followed a regimen of watching the core stretching exercise video and engaging in the exercises three times a week, each session lasting 25 minutes, for a total of 12 weeks. Conversely, the control group did not receive any instructions and engaged in exercises during the study period. Pain level, low back pain disability, and softness were assessed before the intervention and at 4, 8, and 12 weeks following the intervention. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) statistical method was used to compare the intergroup differences.
Results
After 4 weeks of core stretching exercises, a substantial improvement in lower back pain was observed (B=-1.33, p<.001), signifying a statistically significant enhancement compared to the control group (p<.05). However, at the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks, no statistically significant differences were noted between the experimental and control groups in terms of disability level and softness of nurses' lower back pain.
Conclusions
The research findings indicate that engaging in core stretching exercises for a duration of 4 weeks can effectively ameliorate the level of lower back pain experienced by nurses."
