Abstract
Background: Revising health professional education to integrate more deeply with patient narratives is imperative for fostering patient-centered care and enhancing overall healthcare outcomes. Patient partners can contribute insights to this change by shedding light on their encounters with medical care, potential pitfalls, communication gaps, and areas for stronger safety measures. By engaging with patient narratives, healthcare professionals can develop greater empathy, understanding, and cultural competence, thereby building stronger therapeutic alliances and facilitating more personalized and effective care. For patient- and family-centered care to become a reality within the healthcare system, patients and families must be embedded into curriculum as co-designers and co-educators, involved in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of curricula. Objectives: With two patient co-leads, this study aims to determine the governance structures and processes needed to ensure that patients, families, and communities are engaged as partners in the co-design, implementation and evaluation of health education curricula. Review Question: What are the structural barriers and facilitators in engaging patients in developing health education? Methods: This scoping review will be conducted according to the JBI methodology, with study selection and data extraction completed by two reviewers. Results: The extracted data will be presented in a diagrammatic or tabular form that aligns with this scoping review’s objectives. A narrative summary of the findings tables will describe how included studies relate to the research objective and question(s). This project was chosen as one of the highest priority topics to be funded by the SPOR Evidence Alliance from their 2023 Patient and Public Health Research Topic Priority-Setting exercise. Conclusions: It has previously been found that by including expert patients in education programs empathy within students increases. This can aid in understanding patient perspectives leading to improved trust between healthcare worker and patient, as well as enhancing communication and emotional support.
