Abstract
Background: Effective knowledge dissemination is a key component of Cochrane’s mission. However, in many medical specialties, few providers and stakeholders access the Cochrane Library due to time constraints or complexity of the reviews. Strategies to bring Cochrane knowledge to busy clinicians and stakeholders through specialty journal abbreviated article formats can help address this knowledge translation gap.
Objective: The objective of this project is to describe efforts in several medical specialties to enhance knowledge translation to providers and stakeholders through production of brief summaries and synopses in specialty journals.
Methods: Through members of the US Cochrane Network and our partners, we queried efforts made to report on relevant Cochrane Reviews in specialty journals. Descriptive summaries of the efforts and various strategies are provided.
Results: For several years, summaries with titles such as “Cochrane Corners,” “Cochrane Updates,” “From the Cochrane Library” and other summaries and brief reports have been produced in the fields of ophthalmology (Eye), dermatology (JMIR Dermatology), otolaryngology (Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery), obstetrics and gynecology (Obstetrics & Gynecology, AJOG:MFM), and complementary medicine (Explore), to name a few. These features highlight impactful recent Cochrane Reviews with summaries and describe the applicability of the evidence to the audience. Publishing these brief formats in journals that busy providers and stakeholders frequently read has assisted in Cochrane evidence dissemination. Additionally, readership metrics document that they are being accessed and many have been cited.
Conclusions: Production of brief features in specialty journals can effectively aid in dissemination and contextualization of impactful Cochrane Reviews. As these are accessed by providers, they can benefit patients as they aid in dissemination of evidence-based care.
Patient / Consumer Engagement: Evidence end-users, fellows, and early career professionals are invited to co-author these articles.
