Abstract
Background: ebpracticenet promotes dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) information for Belgian health care providers. To better support first line clinical psychologists, we want to tailor our content to their needs.
Objectives: A survey was created to gain insight into the current use of EBP information by first line psychologists and to map out what information psychologists need or would like to use.
Methods: We used Computer Aided Web Interviewing. A survey was prepared by ebpracticenet and shared with first line psychologist via professional associations, Facebook and LinkedIn during 3 months. The survey included questions on socio-demographic characteristics, the current use of EBP information and the needs concerning EBP information.
Results: Two hundred and eleven Belgian first line psychologist completed the survey, out of 14.641 clinical psychologist practicing in Belgium. Half of the respondents (53%) work in an individual practice and many combine this with a role in a group practice or a psychiatric center. Most of respondents (84%) consider it important or very important to work based on EBP. Forty-four percent of the respondents indicated that there is sufficient EBP information available for most of the subjects. Thirty three percent of respondents say that sufficient EBP information is available, but only relates to some topics. Seventy percent of respondents indicate that they look on a regular base for information on treatments and 63% of respondents look on a regular base for EBP information on exercises or assignments for patients. Out of 18 suggested themes, respondents were most interested to have EBP information about: trauma sensitive care (60%), persistent physical complaints (57%) and personality difficulties and personality disorders (53%). In general, respondents indicated having an interest in EBP information on the role of first line psychologists within first line care, the practical approach and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Conclusion: Our study highlighted specific and general topics where Belgian clinical psychologists are interested in having EBP information. Based on this, evidence summaries will be created and shared with psychologists on our platform.
