Introduction: The UKCCCR Register of Cancer Trials is a database of United Kingdom Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) in cancer. The UKCCCR Register provides information for those considering participation in RCTs, helps funding bodies assess the relevance of proposals for new trials and facilitates systematic reviews and meta-analyses. A main aim of the Register is that it should be easy to use and widely available. To facilitate this an Internet version of the Register is being developed.

Objective: To exploit current technology, to design and develop a user friendly World Wide Web Interface for the UKCCCR Register, which will make it as widely available as possible and allow it to be updated remotely over the Internet.

Methods: A World Wide Web interface for the UKCCCR Register, written in Java, has been developed to allow a wide group of users access to the Register via the Internet. The interface includes features that enable users to interactively search the database and to produce reports summarizing trial information using a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer). The interface will also allow registered users to update information which, after verification, can be incorporated in the Register database. Remote data entry will allow the database to be more easily and more frequently updated.

Results/Discussion: The UKCCCR Register World Wide Web interface, which will be demonstrated, can be found on the Web at http://www.mrc-cto.cam.ac.uk/ukcccr/. From July 1998, development of the Interface will focus on allowing the Register database to be remotely updated.
