Abstract
Background: The characteristics of included studies are an indispensable part of Cochrane reviews. The authors of Cochrane reviews use many different ways to compile this information. So, to help make this work more efficient, the Venezuelan Branch of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Network (ICN) has prepared a special piece of computer software. Please visit www.cochrane.fcs.uc.edu. ve/hrs for further information.

Objectives: To facilitate the management and the storage of the characteristics of included studies when preparing a Cochrane review.

Methods: The software is written in English. It requires very little space on the computer's hard drive in order to store the characteristics of included studies, and can be used on a variety of computers and over the internet. We developed it with Personal Hypertext Processor (PHP), and using a database management system (DBMS) PostgreSQL, version 7.4.5. This is open source software, with a General Public Licence (GPL). Output from the software can be copied and pasted into RevMan.

Results: We expect that the software will make it easier for authors to manage the characteristics of included studies in their Cochrane review.

Conclusions: We hope this free program will be a helpful tool for people wishing to prepare and maintain a Cochrane review. In this way, the Venezuelan Branch of the ICN hopes it will become easier for authors to manage information on the characteristics of their included studies.
