Abstract
Background: As the clearing house responsible for promoting evidence-based medicine (EBM) in Japan, the Medical Information Network Distribution Service (MINDS) Center was established in April 2002, subsidized by a research fund from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. MINDS is a web-based information platform of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). MINDS also started a project, preparing and distributing Japanese translations of the abstracts of Cochrane systematic reviews (CSRs) relevant to the CPGs on MINDS website in June 2006. Objectives: To describe the chronological changes in the number of user accesses to CSRs, and to compare before and after the MINDS website design renewal from login to non-login system at the end of September 2008. Methods: We analyzed data from the access log database of MINDS reported from April 2008 to February 2009. Computing the monthly mean number of user accesses to CSRs according to the disease group (DG; 1 disease group consists of 1 CPG), we compared the monthly mean number for period 1 (May 2008 to September 2008) with those for period 2 (October 2008 to February 2009). Results: Total number of user accesses to CSR dramatically increased after MINDS website redesign (from 789 per month to 38,534 per month; from 18 DG per month to 876 DG per month). The increase in CSR user access was identified through all 44 DGs. The breakdown of type of users (login user and non-login user) showed that the increased number of non-login users mainly contributed to the increase of the total number of CSR users. The total number of users accessing CPGs (about 8,500 CPG per month) were, however, far greater than those of CSR users. Conclusions: We need to make more effort advertising CSRs and improving the user accessibility so that many more MINDS users access CSRs.
