Abstract
Background:
‘Open Access’ (OA) is a way of publishing scholarly research that makes it available, unrestricted, online. Cochrane OA means that authors choose to make their Cochrane Review or Protocol OA in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) immediately upon publication (Gold), authors of all other reviews and protocols will see them go 'free-to-view' 12 months after publication (Green). (Content published before Feb 2013 is not included in the agreement).

Objectives:
Cochrane-Wiley have worked together, to enable authors to have their Cochrane Reviews/Protocols free-to-view upon publication, or free-to-view 12 months after publication. Licencing arrangements, using a Creative Commons license, selected in Archie, means content is easier to share and reuse. Gold Cochrane Reviews are included in PubMed Central, a digital repository of the US National Library of Medicine.

Methods:
Green OA of a Review/Protocol will result in the automatic rollover, via Archie and Wiley systems, to OA 365 days after publication. Once the review is OA, authors can submit the review to repositories of their choosing. Gold OA is confirmed when ready for publication. Licenses/Creative Commons copyright are selected. Wiley receives notification and upon publication a purple open padlock and license details are displayed. Wiley submits the Gold review version to PubMed Central, for author convenience. The version of the review that will be OA is the new citation version. Gold OA purchased for an update, means the previous versions of the review will be made free-to-view as per Green OA process. Only the Gold OA version will receive the benefits of Gold OA access.

Results:
February 2014 saw 172 reviews and protocols roll over to Green OA. By September 2014 over 1500 reviews and protocols will be under Green OA. Gold OA has seen a gradual uptake with nine Cochrane Reviews and Protocols published by March 2014.

Conclusions:
Cochrane’s 2020 Strategy is moving to make all Cochrane Reviews free upon publication. Wiley is supporting Cochrane’s goal by administering Green and Gold OA, by adapting technology and processes to make this happen.
