Abstract
Background:
The most recent update of the Cochrane Systematic Review ‘Interventions for preventing obesity in children’ was published in 2011. Since then, a large body of relevant evidence has accumulated. To ensure the next update of this Cochrane review reflects recent developments in the field of obesity prevention, meets the needs of review stakeholders - in particular policymakers - and does not duplicate systematic reviews (SRs) that have been published since 2011, a two-staged research program will guide the next update. This presentation describes Stage 2 of this program: an overview of systematic reviews of interventions for preventing obesity in children.
Objectives:
The primary aim of this overview was to identify gaps in the methodology and scope of existing SRs that could be addressed in the update of the Cochrane Review ‘Interventions for preventing obesity in children’.
Methods:
Three electronic databases were searched (DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects), Health Evidence and The Cochrane Library) to identify relevant SRs published between 2010 and 2014. SRs were selected in three stages: by title, abstract and full text article. Two authors conducted all stages of screening. A third author was consulted to resolve disagreements. Two reviewers independently extracted data from SRs according to a predesigned data extraction tool, and assessed the methodological quality of each SR using the revised version of the AMSTAR tool. SRs were mapped according to population, intervention and outcome characteristics, and overall quality.
Results and Conclusions:
Results will be available prior to the Cochrane Colloquium. This presentation will present the background, aims, methods and results of this overview, and discuss how results will guide the development of the update of the Cochrane Systematic Review ‘Interventions for preventing obesity in children’ (E Waters et a. 2011).
