Abstract
"Background:
The recent COVID pandemic has emphasized the many impacts of bereavement, grief and loss. It is widely acknowledged that bereavement care services appropriate to individual need should be readily accessible across all settings to those in need of support.
Objectives:
To describe direct routes to clinical impact of projects in the area of bereavement support.
•Welsh Government requested scoping survey of bereavement services led to a National Bereavement Framework for Wales
•A rapid review of interventions following mass bereavement events informed a rapidly funded UKRI study identifying COVID pandemic impacts on the experiences of bereaved people and services.
Methods:
In 2019, a scoping survey was undertaken targeting services identified as providing structured bereavement support across Wales. In 2020, a rapid review was carried out examining bereavement support responses at time of mass deaths.
Results:
Review informed a UK-wide study investigating grief experiences, bereavement support needs and support provision during the pandemic with direct implications for UK policy and practice. In 2021, prompted by our scoping review, a Bereavement framework for Wales was developed setting out best practice and monitoring requirements for bereavement care across Wales.
Conclusions:
The UK-wide study focused on the real-world care needs of those experiencing bereavement and have directly impacted on policy and practice across Wales and in the wider UK. The use of scoping and rapid review methodologies to identify unmet needs and gaps in understanding, underscores their value in aligning research with urgent clinical evidence requirements.
