Abstract
Background: The WHO Abortion care guideline is an updated guideline that reflects recent evidence on clinical management, service delivery, and law and policy related to abortion care. It consolidates this recent evidence, to respond to the pressing need to eliminate unsafe abortion and to ensure the attainment of quality abortion care. In the lead-up to the launch and immediately after, a concerted effort was made for the dissemination of the guidelines. These efforts are ongoing as the focus has shifted to the implementation of the recommendations and best practices.
Objectives: To effectively disseminate the WHO Abortion care guideline and to determine the level of impact through collaboration with the QNS department that is currently developing a framework for WHO guideline uptake and impact
Methods: A multi prong approach was taken for the dissemination of the guidelines that involved the WHO regional offices, implementing partners and key stakeholders. Interactive discussions and engagements informed the development of derivative products to facilitate implementation of the recommendations. Collaboration with the Quality, Norms and Standards (QNS) department at WHO provided a framework for the dissemination and implementation activities with the aim to determine the level of impact on the countries.
Results: Dissemination activities included extensive dialogues with regional colleagues, development of a resource kit containing communication tools, FAQs and a technical presentation to generate standardized messaging, as well as a webinar series. Translated editions of the guideline and Executive Summary in the 5 UN languages, clinical poster, pocket cards, the accompanying Clinical Handbook for quality abortion care, a digital decision support tool and an evidence brief focusing on the Law and policy recommendations are among the derivative products that have been launched. These dissemination activities have been aligned with the stages in the Reach/Use/Impact framework developed by QNS.
Conclusions: Dissemination efforts have transitioned to the implementation phase where operationalization of the recommendations have been facilitated through the derivative products. Measuring the impact of these efforts are critical and ongoing to ensure that comprehensive abortion care is accessible to all women and girls.
