Abstract
Chairs: Elie Akl (American University of Beirut, Lebanon), Monika Nothacker (Association of the Scientific Medical Societies, Berlin, Germany)
Speakers: Holger Schünemann (Chair, Guidelines International Network), Amir Qaseem (Vice President, Clinical Policy, American College of Physicians), Vivian Welch (CEO, Campbell Collaboration), Joe Zordan (Executive Director, Joanna Briggs Institute), Steph Grohmann (Research Integrity Editor, Cochrane International)
Objectives: The aim of this session is to shed light on the management of conflicts of interest (COIs) in health care organizations that make patient-relevant decisions or provide the basis for such decisions and to further develop respective strategies.
Description: Whereas COI management for clinical practice guidelines is mainly accepted as necessary for trustworthiness, the management of COIs of health care organizations has so far mostly been left to them. In this session, representatives of the participating organizations will present their respective COI management approach after introduction of general principles/a general framework. Subsequently, the audience will discuss key aspects for a structured approach that enable us to assess COIs of health care organizations and to draw appropriate conclusions for consequences.
Activities/interaction plans: Introduction of COI principles and framework (10 min), presentation of COI policy by each speaker (8 min each). For preparation, speakers will get questions concerning content of declaration of interest (direct financial, indirect), classification of severity used, assessment criteria as well as frequency of evaluation and appointed persons undertaking assessment, established consequences, and transparency of COI policy/declarations of interests to members and the public. Structured discussion according to aspects mentioned, facilitated by chairs (30 min), digital voting on key aspects. Summary and conclusions (10 min).
