The effectiveness of game-based teaching in nursing education: A systematic review

Abstract
"Background: Gamification teaching is gradually being used in professional course teaching. To meet the evolving needs of today’s nursing students , game-based learning has received increasing attention. It can improve learning outcomes, while enhancing learning experiences by promoting engagement and motivation.
Objective: This review focused on empirical evidence for the effectiveness of gam-based in nursing education
Methods: We systematically searched multiple databases, and electronic databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), and Airiti Library were searched from inception till January 2024. Review methods: Randomization control trial were included, involving the use of games for education among nursing students or nurses. Both published and unpublished studies in English and Chinese language without restrictions to the year of publication. Methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the JBI appraisal tool.
Results: A total of 12 studies were included among 1175 nursing students and nurse across 6 countries. Negative outcomes for using gamification were not reported. These included 12 quantitative studies with methodological quality ranging from low to high. Nine studies revealed that the gamified teaching can improve nursing knowledge score, nine studies revealed that the gamified teaching can improve the accuracy of nursing skill and four studies revealed can improve learning attitude. Two study show that gamifed teaching has higher learning satisfaction than tradition teaching. The findings from this review demonstrate that game-based education interventions can enhance nursing education outcome, ex knowledge, performance and perction.
Conclusions: Game-based education is promising in promoting positive learning outcomes among nursing students and nurse. Our finding suggest that it is possible to improve learning outcomes in nursing education by using gamification. Future research could test in different field, such as communication skills.
