Abstract
Background:
In Sweden, the incidence of gang-related crime and various manifestations of networked criminal activities has increased significantly in recent years. This has consequences for the entire society, not least in the erosion of perceived levels of public security. Extensive efforts to combat this societal issue have been initiated, underscoring the importance of their evaluation and to the greatest extent possible prioritize interventions that are known to have positive long-term effects.
To accomplish this, researchers need to be provided with increased opportunity to identify all relevant research in an effective way.
Objectives:
In an ongoing project, we will create an exhaustive literature search strategy that identifies all relevant research literature on the topic gangs, criminal networks and organized crime. The ambition is to create the ultimate search strategy, building on all previous efforts. It will be of use in different research areas, e.g. social services, criminology and police research. By developing and sharing this search strategy, the aim is ultimately to facilitate researchers' work and hopefully contributing to the existing knowledge base in the field.
Methods:
Using the systematic search methodology from HTA, we will construct a search strategy that encompasses all facets of organized crime, ensuring the ultimate coverage of relevant research literature. By involving experts in various disciplines, we integrate knowledge and insights from multiple perspectives building a comprehensive understanding of the subject. This search strategy will hopefully be disseminated across diverse research areas to help optimize future research efforts and resource utilization.
Conclusions:
We want to share our experiences having had the ambition to develop the ultimate search strategy and get insights in whether this will be helpful to other researchers or information specialists. By integrating HTA search methodology in the field of gang research, we hope to contribute to a more robust knowledge base, facilitating evidence-based decision-making and bolstering efforts to combat organized crime effectively.
