Abstract
Background:
In 2023, we updated the 2017 Canadian guideline for opioid therapy and chronic non-cancer pain. Development of a rigorous evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) is essential but not sufficient to promote evidence-based clinical practice; it is essential to implement knowledge translation (KT) strategies to optimize reach, access, and appropriate uptake of recommendations.
Objective:
Our aims are first to identify, evaluate and map published strategies to disseminate guideline recommendations, and second to engage relevant stakeholders, including patient partners, to prioritize the identified short, moderate, and long-term KT strategies according to perceived impact (effectiveness).
Methods:
Our process includes:
•inviting relevant stakeholders, including patient partners and clinicians, researchers, and other decision makers, to participate in ranking guideline KT strategies.
•systematically identifying relevant systematic reviews on guideline KT strategies.
•updating the most current and rigorously conducted systematic review and, based on the findings, collating a list of short, medium, and long term KT strategies.
•supplementing the list of strategies using two approaches: (1) asking relevant stakeholders to review and suggest additional strategies and (2) developing specific prompts to generate a list of strategies using AI software.
•conducting a prioritization exercise by developing and sending out a series of surveys including the list of KT strategies along with their effectiveness (when reported) to our stakeholders for prioritization using a 7-point Likert scale.
•using the GRADE criteria to inform their ratings of KT strategies. This includes assessing their values and preferences, and feasibility, acceptability, cost effectiveness and impact on equity of the different approaches.
•presenting findings in a hybrid meeting to achieve final consensus on the KT strategies that will be implemented to disseminate the updated opioid guideline recommendations.
Anticipated results:
A list of prioritized activities and co-developed short, moderate, and long-term KT strategies to enhance access to and uptake of the updated opioid guideline recommendations in practice and policy.
